Yesterday, while at lunch, I overheard some people at the table next to me: "What's he going to do now that he got laid off?" one asked. "He has a good degree," the other said. "He'll be fine."
In that simple moment, one of the best reasons for earning a college degree was solidified. Of course you attend school, and aim to graduate, with the goals of learning how to think critically and get a formal education past high school. But you also spend so many years tired, up late, low on cash, and working like a dog for another reason: You don't want that sleep/work/cash pattern to be what you face for the rest of your life. Earning a college degree can help you get a great job out of college -- and later down the road when life unexpectedly throws you a curve ball, like a layoff or unexpected gap in employment.
